Brooks Larmer piece on barrel children in the Caribbean was the first article on this issue published in a mainstream periodical in the U.S. I am placing a link to the article here so that we can revisit it.

I am a product of stepwise migration. I was born in Trinidad and Tobago. My parents left Trinidad for the U.S. when I was age 5. My sister and I lived with our maternal grandmother and aunts. I reunited with my parents 7 years later at age 12. They returned to Trinidad to live and operate a grocery store. We moved to the Bronx, NY one year later. This is my story and the story of countless other barrel children.
